What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows you to request articles and books that the library does not have access to or copies of articles and book chapters in the library collection. Items will then be sent to your account and you will be able to log in and retrieve the full-text. Your records will be retained for three years before deletion.
Who can use Interlibrary Loan?
All UNMC affiliates may request items. These affiliates include UNMC students, faculty, and staff, employees and private practice physicians of Nebraska Medicine and Children's Hospital Omaha, visiting students and faculty to UNMC, and UNMC alumni. Nebraska health professionals, lawyers, and residents, as well as Western Iowa professionals and residents may also request items. If you are not a member of one of these groups, please contact your public library for assistance.
I am ordering for someone else. What do I do?
If you are an office or graduate assistant who is ordering for a faculty member, for instance, you must create an account for that person in their name. Create a username that is not their UNMC Net ID username, such as "proxyjohndoe." This is necessary for copyright tracking. The system, unfortunately, will not allow a single login to manage multiple accounts. When registering, please provide the names of all of the people who are authorized to access this account in the Authorized Users field. If necessary, please provide the faculty member with the login information. There should only be one account for one individual. You may enter multiple email addresses, separated by a comma, but no spaces after the comma.
How do I register?
UNMC users can simply log in with their UNMC Net ID and password to register or return to their account. If you do not have a unmc.edu email account, you must create an accountn with the Create an Account link.
What if I forget my password?
UNMC.edu user accounts are tied to their UNMC Net ID and password.
If you do not have a UNMC.edu account and you forget your password

- Click the Forgot Password? link to reset your password, OR
- Contact Interlibrary Loan at 402-559-7085 to have it reset.
Are there fees associated with requesting items?
There are no transaction fees for UNMC faculty, staff, and students or Nebraska Medicine and Children's Hospital Omaha physicians and staff.
Alumni, Nebraska and Western Iowa health professionals, lawyers, and residents, and Loansome Doc customers are charged $11 for items in the library collection and $25 for items the library must obtain from other libraries. Copyright surcharges may apply when the library exceeds its copyright on a title. This fee is determined by the current rate set by the Copyright Clearance Center.
What is the turnaround time for requested articles and books?
If the library owns the print version of a journal, you will receive a scanned copy of the article the same or next business day. If we need to request the article from another library, the average turnaround time is 1.5 business days. Books requested from other libraries can take up to a week or more.
Can I request an item for personal reasons?
This service is to be used for requests that are related to your work, research, or education at UNMC. For leisure or popular titles or works not related to the UNMC mission, we advise you to contact your local public library for service.
What are service levels and when will my request be processed?
A service level is the priority that you would like your request handled. The default service level is Regular. The Interlibrary Loan Department processes requests throughout the day (Monday - Friday). Requests made after 3:00 p.m. may not be processed until the following business morning. The average turnaround time from request to receipt is 1.5 days. If you need an item the same day, please request it as a Rush or Urgent Patient Care, when applicable. The Interlibrary Loan Department will do everything possible to get the item to you in an expedited manner; however, requests made at the end of the business day may not be received in time.
Can I cancel a request?
You can cancel a request yourself if it has not been processed. To cancel, go to the Requests in Process section, click on the Transaction number, then click the link at the top of the page titled Cancel Request. If your request is already in a processing queue, you will not see that Cancel link. To cancel, you must contact the Interlibrary Loan Department at 402-559-7085. We will make every effort to cancel the request; however, if the item has already been processed by the lending library, we may not be able to cancel the request.
